3. Genre Research: Drama
The main genre for the film is Drama. This film will be exceptionally serious, visually and implied, with mental illnesses, like depression and suicide. There would be conflicts between the character, with themselves and other characters.
In Hollywood, or most mainstream medias, show depression either too broad, giving no information on why they have depression or that there are so many incorrect stereotypes given to the character, showing them as insane. Specific ideas seem to be blown out of proportion in Drama medias. I don't want my film to show mental illness to that extreme, but as something that is a boarder and they work their life living with it. The film is to show a regular person's life with a struggle, just like most of the audience would feel or relate to.
Many dramas tend to over-exaggerate, even with the camera angles. Camera angles tend to change quickly to show each person's emotion, like when someone did something bad and there are quick, straight cuts to all the other character's faces. Sometimes the camera position itself changes, like a straight head-on shot to a diagonal shot. There can even be pans or tilts to empathize, continuing with the example, stress or concern during that time. I want to include many different angles, diagonal, close ups, or pans in the film as much as I can, since the main genre is Drama.
Some Dramas use music to empathize the visuals, like in Stranger Things, there were many chase scenes, which used punctual music to accompany the action happening on the screen. The music in my film won't be as dramatic, however the music will show the same emotions the character feels. If they are happy, the music is lively and when they're calm, the music will become mostly wild sound.
This clip from Stranger Things shows the difference in size with the character and the monster. I can use this slightly low angle to empathize the character and the canvas, to show that the canvas can be intimidating with the size or that the character has to put so much happiness/ care into their painting to fill the entire thing.
During the river scene, it can also express that the character is much smaller in the world, which has been filled with much hate and they want to bring joy to it.
