8. Painting Ideas

The painting in the story is one of the main focuses. It will be what you last see before the film would end with, the painting of the river. However, since the character will be painting in the beginning, which the viewer will have a clear view on, there needs to be some type of meaning. The film ends with suicide, and the symbolism usually used with depression/ hopeless should be seen on the canvas.

The character views the world as grey and gloomy, but they want to see the color live has to offer, which they will do themselves. The typical symbols used for depression can be ravens, skulls and specific flowers, like Lilies, Purple Hyacinths, Forget-Me-Nots and Marigolds. The character will use all the elements but paint them with the brightest version of their usual muted color. Ravens are dark blue, the character will paint them as bright/ pastel blue.

The skull will be in the middle to show what the character will end up as.

However for the background of the painting, it will be a dark grey to the point it's basically black and the table everything is resting on, will be a dirty brown. The character sees the world with color, but that doesn't erase the fact that there is still darkness in their world that they cannot escape. The room will also be lit up by the sun, and if there are too many colors, then it might reflect the light and ruin what's trying to be shown. Also to mention that the closet the canvas will be resting on is white, it can differentiate the canvas from the closet.

It's to balance the painting itself and for the camera to pick up the painting in a visually appealing way, so the viewers aren't overwhelmed by the amount of light colors in the room.
