16. Sound Ideas

The music of the film will reflect the images projected in the film, following the emotions that the main character feels. The character starts (Scene 1) from a tranquil atmosphere, to a panic, then ending in pure chaos and frustration, where the music will either completely cut out with the scream, or slowly echo out. For Scene 2, there will be mostly wild sound, not too much music, maybe some light instrumental when they decide to take a picture of the river (Shot 23) indicating that the photo has significance later on in the film. I plan to create my music using GarageBand.

During Scene 1, Shots 1- 6, will portray a calming music, the character is peacefully painting, they're quite happy with how it's going on, mostly using a piano. Shot 7 is where they mess up, the music will start to pick up a little, maybe adding more instruments, other strings. The continuing shots will continue with a quicker tempo, instruments getting louder and overlapping music. As the character get more frustrated the music follows with music coming from different directions, some getting quieter, some louder. Till it ends with Shot 17, where the character paints over the camera lens, and screams, completely killing the music to only hearing the scream.

This clip of the song Bernadette is basically what I want to create during the frantic shots. There are many different instruments playing their own "song", each can be heard playing something, seemingly, incoherent with the rest of the song, with overlapping. Each instrument sounds like it's fighting to be the loudest/most prominent sound.

Types of instruments used: Bass Guitar, Cello, Drums, Glockenspiel, Mandolin, Musical Saw, Organ.

Scene 2 is the character back to their calm state, however it's not due to painting/ something that is internal, they are feeling peaceful due to the river. To reflect the feeling that the character gets from the river, is to use the river. I plan to collect wild sound from the location, water moving, wind, insects making sounds, leaves or grass moving. There isn't much music needed. It may be important to put instrumental during the character taking the picture (Shots 21-23) to empathize the picture, since that is the entire point of the movie, for the character to paint the river and then jump in it.
