15. Clothing

Image
The character will wear bright colors. This would be more  prominent later on in the film, like when the character goes to school and majority of kids are wearing black, grey, just darker, gloomy colors. It may be shown during the "flashback" or memory scene when they are shocked, like where everything except them is greyed out to make them stand out, like how they stand out in their normal day. That can also give the viewer an idea on how the character sees the world and themselves. They see themselves like a beacon of light inside the world covered in empty, painful darkness.      For the clothing, I have decided that a solid pink shirt and black pants would be the most logically and symbolically idea. The pink shirt is too symbolize that they feel comfort and joy in their clothes, they want to dress brightly, it could help someone and bring the light into someone else's life. The pants are black because an actual artist typ...

14. Underprepared

Image
During the weekend I had the equipment to shoot, I realized how underprepared I was in the film. The painting wasn't made, there is barely an idea for the sound and I  didn't even have an idea for what the character was going to wear.      I decided to create a  schedule to try to organize the whole process, since before in school, we were given the time to make the film, but now it needs to be done on our own times. As someone who procrastinates till the last minute, I know this will help in sure I actually complete this film.

13. Depending on the sun

Image
The film depends on the sun for the entire film, for natural lighting in the room. Which will show the brightness/ comfort the character has in the room and that the darkness is kept outside the room. The real problem is the sunset. The weather and my own time is a tough barrier in this production phase. The weekend I had the equipment I couldn't get any sunset shots, since it was cloudy everyday. The coming up weekend I won't have time to take any shots. Sunset lasts for about a hour, which isn't much time to do what I have planned, so I would have to go on separate days too.      I feel that I may have to change the sunset to a midday shot instead. In relation to the room shot it is more reasonable for it to be midday as the character would storm out at that time, however the character would been show sitting there, seemingly for a while, maybe waiting till sunset. If it has to be changed then the red paint over the camera would need to change to a ye...

12. Incorporating Bullying

Image
During the research of the film, I was looking at the entire film, rather than what would be shown during the two minutes. There was a lot of research done for the bullying aspect (Slice-Of-Life), however that wouldn't have been shown during the beginning.      To make up for the lack of bullying, I have decided to add bullying. When the character messes up their painting, standing still and shocked, there will be a voiceover where people are saying hateful words to them, that will also fill in the empty sound that would have been absolutely nothing.      There should also be visuals added around the character, to add some audience appeal/ focus as introducing a character is relatively boring. From what I am imagining, it would fit with film, grey out compared to the bright sunlight behind, using different brightness to represent the pain (dark lights). However the actual edit for the flashbacks could be seen as an awful choice. Tw...

11. Clichés

Image
After getting feedback, I have been informed that the film is basically a walking cliché. However, that's something that I would want. This story is partially based on my own life and feelings towards my art. There are aspects where there are differences, like the type of bullying the character would go through (physical bullying). The main idea for the film is basically the same. Most times I draw, I get extremely overwhelmed or frustrated to the point where I rip the paper and completely give up, to then try again another day. Sometimes I want to completely give up on art, but that hasn't been crossed just yet.     I have barely completed paintings, or canvases that have been repainted over with white to cover the mistakes I had made before. In fact, the canvas that will be used is one that I have done 2 different artworks on and have hated. That brings more meaning to the film for me, especially if the painting comes out good, I will be covering ov...

10. Using Rule of Thirds

Image
Rule of Thirds is typically used to show the relationship between characters, and for visual pleasure. The character, for the first minute, or so, will be with the canvas. I want to show that the character is extremely close to the canvas, within one box. However while time passes, the character will get further away. Not physical distance, but there will be more distance in the Rule of Thirds, as well as not having only those two in the entire frame.      The relationship the character has with the canvas should be close, since they are happy to be painting, however get further once they mess up and start hating what they have created. Typically people won't slightly shuffle away from their canvas when they annoyed. I would actually get up and walk around to stop myself from getting too overwhelmed, which could be added to show the character more frantic.      If the character stands and walks around, with the camera Still, t...

9. Camera Struggles

Image
After completing, even while drawing out the Storyboard, there seems to be problems in how much variety of camera angles I can complete on my own. There can be Tracking shots, however only when I'm not in the frame, the only time where I could use a tracking shot is during the frantic and attempt to fix the painting, where the camera would follow the character's hands or brush/rag.    The way I hope to combat the problems is to create or use items to attach onto the tripod and move the angle while I'm still in the frame.  I have a skateboard where I can put the tripod onto, and tie a string to pull it, where that will give dolly shots. The Panning shots purposely don't have the character in the frame, so I can do that myself.      The problems will mostly be fixed during the actual production, not much I can figure out without actually doing it.

8. Painting Ideas

Image
The painting in the story is one of the main focuses. It will be what you last see before the film would end with, the painting of the river. However, since the character will be painting in the beginning, which the viewer will have a clear view on, there needs to be some type of meaning. The film ends with suicide, and the symbolism usually used with depression/ hopeless should be seen on the canvas.       The character views the world as grey and gloomy, but they want to see the color live has to offer, which they will do themselves. The typical symbols used for depression can be ravens, skulls and specific flowers, like Lilies, Purple Hyacinths, Forget-Me-Nots and Marigolds. The character will use all the elements but paint them with the brightest version of their usual muted color. Ravens are dark blue, the character will paint them as bright/ pastel blue.     The skull will be in the middle to show what the character will end up as...

7. Using Light

Image
The film will be playing and using light to tell a lot of the story. The character will be dressed in bright colors, like pink, white, pastels, etc. The character is meant to look like an outcast in their world, everything else will be gloomy, dark, the opposite of what they are. It is meant to show that the character will never fit in anywhere, not in their home, where only a spilt second will show the color in the house. Neither in their school, they would be the only person wearing colors that can hurt someone's eyes, while everyone and the classrooms show murky blues, greens or blacks. Everything the character sees in their life is void of color, except for them, what they have created and anything that has impacted them positively.      There will be warm colors showing comfort and care to the character. The cool colors are what divides them from being the same. They are too unique in the world, looking for something in the world that they c...

6. Storyboard

Image
I have a good idea on what I want the film to look like, so I decided to work on the storyboard to enhance my understanding, and base my work on what is physically here. I realized that relaying on my memory for the film would be terrible, as I forget easily, or misremember important information. The Storyboard is a physical memory and guide. I can change a scene with ease and when I have the entire work down, the Portfolio can be completed quicker, with cleaner organization.     Even while working on the Storyboard I get new ideas to better the film. For example, when the character ruins the painting, they will paint over the lens of the camera, which will lead to the next location. The type of paint I will use for the character "ruining" their painting will be red, instead of black. When they mark over the lens with paint, it might show the paint color still, so the next scene revolves around a sunset at the river. Sunsets usually have red or some c...

5. Sub-genre: Tragedy

Image
The other sub-genre is Tragedy. The actual reason for Tragedy won't be shown within the first two minutes of the film, but it will be how it ends.      The story of Macbeth is similar to how it will end, with a Tragedy of the main character dying. Using Tragedy for a sub-genre is to include the fact that suicide and depression are serious topics that will be used within the film. The character is constantly suffering through the film and all they wanted to do was bring light to their world. The character could have affected others in the movie, like students that bullied them noticing the main character has left and they realize their actions, that is to tie the heroic aspect of a Tragedy into the film.

4. Sub-genre: Slice-Of-Life

Image
Slice-Of-Life medias are an invitation to someone's day and regular life. The character is living their life, an artist who happens to have a horrible environment they grow in. There would viewers who how similar lives to the character, which is what I would want to happen. Medias with this  sub-genre are made out to be happy and joyful, rather than depressing. Why not combat typical mainstream ideas?            Some anime movies, Howl's Moving Castle or Wolf Children, are Slice-Of-Life and the camera is basically following the character's throughout their days. The camera movements aren't very impactful, like they're long takes or establishing shots and the characters aren't affected by the camera placement. In my film, I want to use establishing shots, if possible due to physical bounds, to show the character being a small person in the world, but being big enough to bring life to their void world. For long take...

3. Genre Research: Drama

The main genre for the film is Drama. This film will be exceptionally serious, visually and implied, with mental illnesses, like depression and suicide. There would be conflicts between the character, with themselves and other characters.     In Hollywood, or most mainstream medias, show depression either too broad, giving no information on why they have depression or that there are so many incorrect stereotypes given to the character, showing them as insane. Specific ideas seem to be blown out of proportion in Drama medias. I don't want my film to show mental illness to that extreme, but as something that is a boarder and they work their life living with it. The film is to show a regular person's life with a struggle, just like most of the audience would feel or relate to.     Many dramas tend to over-exaggerate, even with the camera angles. Camera angles tend to change quickly to show each person's emotion, like when someone did s...

2. The Film Ideas

Image
This film was created from an essay prompt I wrote in English.      The actual story is much different than what the film will come out to be, however the main issues in the stories are almost similar. There is repeated moments that have led the character to feel levels of misery to the point where they don't want to live anymore. The essay involved less dynamic camera angles and locations, so I revised it to have more happening in the 2 minutes, rather than what would be sitting by a river, speaking and probably jumping in. There is also an issue where there is no quick moving rivers around.      The essay revolved around an attempt of a third arranged marriage. The main character had no aspiration to get married and had parents who weren't together anymore. They believed that they couldn't be a picture perfect family with whoever they married. The guilt and stress they had went through for years finally weighed down on them, along wit...

1. Introduction

Image
Hello, my name is Vanessa and I'm in 11th grade attending Coral Springs High School in Florida. I work for a content creator, as an editor, for about one and a half years now, doing simple edits and entire videos at times. Editing is something I'm passionate about, seeing people get excited and entertained by tiny or enormous edits. It brings me joy when when others are delighted by something I create.       For this film, I've decided to not be an editor, but to focus on cinematography. For the videos I normally edit, it's a video game with a set view, first person. Now that the film I'm creating can be moved by me personally, I want to see what I can do with different camera angles. To see the character from a different angle, to understand what looks dynamic for the view to keep the viewer entertained. It'll be a challenge for me since I'm not used to viewing from an unfixed view, but a challenge is never simple!     For the entire fil...
